Starting project: Support for Development of Agricultural Cooperatives in Macedonia


On March 22, 2018 in Skopje, at the premises of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, CARE Balkans, Office in Skopje organised the kick off meeting for the EU funded project "Support for Development of Agricultural Cooperatives in Macedonia" implemented by CARE in the Balkans and the implementing partner Macedonian Enterprise development Foundation (MEDF).

The event was participated by more than 60 interested farmers, representatives of existing agricultural cooperatives, local and national media, representatives of the authorities, civil society organisations and international NGOs. The participants were addressed by Mr. Ljupcho Nikolovski the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, Mr. Kostantinos Soupilas Program Manager at the Delegation of the European Union, Ms. Vesna Jovanovic, Regional Program Coordinator for Socio-Economic Inclusion of CARE in the Balkans, Ms Tetjana Lazarevka, MEDF Executive Director.


"The main goal of this project is to increase the competitiveness of the market, as well as the cooperation between the farmers in the Republic of Macedonia, by creating favorable conditions for the development of the existing and creating new agricultural cooperatives. Our experience shows that when farmers work in cooperatives with large arable land, they ensure harmonized market quality, application of modern technologies, good agricultural practice, as well as greater competitiveness and better ranking of Macedonian agricultural and food products on the foreign markets." said the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, Ljupco Nikolovski.



"Agricultural cooperatives are important for rural development and the full development of the economy in the European Europe has 51,000 agricultural cooperatives, of which 20,000 are in the European Union and have an annual turnover of 50 billion euros. This project will play an important role in the development of the co-operative society in the Republic of Macedonia, " Mr. Soupilas said.



The project is funded by the European Union through the budget line: Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance - IPA II. It will be implemented in until February 2021 on the entire territory of the Republic of Macedonia
