Emergency Response

In line with CARE’s humanitarian strategy and regional priorities, CARE has a mandate to respond to emergency situations that affect the region such as refugee crisis (since 2015 to date) or devastating floods that have left many without homes and livelihood. In that respect CARE focuses on initiatives which mainly build the capacity of our staff and partners to meet the specific humanitarian needs of women, men, boys and girls in a way which promotes gender equality and is raising the profile of the needs and rights of women and girls impacted by the disaster. In terms of interventions, CARE is providing assistance to meet the needs of affected population. In a short term the assistance includes: food and drinking water, hygiene items, household items, emergency WASH support, tools, repair materials, protective clothing, winterization items as well as protection measures with the focus on issue (unaccompanied) minors and women are facing. In the aftermath of the crisis, CARE supports communities to overcome affects of the disaster or crisis by focusing on restoring livelihoods, infrastructure and psychosocial effects of the crisis. CARE methodology combines direct assistance and outreach through local partners throughout the Western Balkans region. CARE has been active in providing emergency assistance to refugees and migrants. Additionally, to stop the spread of Covid-19 pandemic CARE supported vulnerable communities, who were disproportionally affected by the pandemic.

Refugee and Migrant Response

CARE has been engaged on responding to refugee and migrant crisis since the Balkan transit route has seen a large influx of refugees in 2015. Together with local partner organisation in Serbia and Croatia CARE provided aid to people on the route and those that have been accommodated in the camps and reception facilities. CARE’s activities consisted of food provision, WASH assistance, provision of shelter and protection. CERE continued its response activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2017 and is actively working with its partners in the field today. Considering a changing nature of the crisis, in Bosnia and Herzegovina CARE attempts to address gaps particularly when it comes to immediate needs of the groups outside the camp facilities and is active in awareness raising of the needs of this vulnerable population. Through its activities CARE reached over 17,000 people.

The Refugee Response activities have been supported by various donors and private foundations including: Austrian Development Agency, European Union, Norwegian Government, DFID, German Cooperation, Government of Luxembourg, Latter Day Saints Charities etc.
