Developmental Work
CARE Balkans works to advance social and economic justice by addressing the root causes of inequality and exclusion across the Western Balkans. Our development programs focus on expanding opportunities, strengthening local leadership, and supporting communities to build more inclusive and resilient societies. At the center of this work is a strong commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.
A key part of our approach is working in close partnership with civil society organizations, community groups, institutions, and regional networks. Rather than implementing projects alone, CARE collaborates with and strengthens local partners particularly grassroots organizations, women’s rights groups, and youth-led initiative —to build sustainable, locally driven solutions. By investing in the capacities of civil society and fostering multi-sector partnerships, we support communities to advocate for their rights, influence policies, and lead change within their own societies.
Through these partnerships and programs, CARE Balkans promotes inclusive development that expands economic opportunities, strengthens democratic participation, and addresses the structural barriers that keep people in poverty and vulnerability.
Gender Equality
Gender equality is a cross cutting priority across all CARE Balkans programs. We work to prevent gender-based violence, challenge harmful gender norms, and support women and girls in claiming their rights, leadership, and economic independence. By engaging women, men, youth, institutions, and communities, we promote lasting social change and more equal power relations.
Economic Justice
CARE Balkans promotes inclusive and climate-smart economic empowerment by supporting women, youth, and marginalized communities to access sustainable livelihoods and economic opportunities. Our programs support the development of small businesses, social enterprises, and cooperatives while fostering innovation and environmentally sustainable approaches. By strengthening local networks and market systems, we help marginalized groups gain greater access to resources, skills, and economic decision-making.
Social Justice
CARE Balkans works to foster social transformation and inclusive societies by strengthening civil society, supporting grassroots organizations, and advocating for policies that protect the rights of marginalized communities. Together with our partners, we work to challenge discrimination, expand access to social services and economic opportunities, and promote active participation in community and public life. These efforts contribute to stronger, more inclusive systems that respond to the needs of all people.
