What we do

Our background and presence

CARE started its mission in the Balkans in the early 90s to provide emergency and medical assistance to people affected by the wars and the destruction, traumatisation, displacement and inter-ethnic distrust that they caused. During its early years, CARE focused on humanitarian and life-saving work. Today, CARE’s aim in the Balkans is to ensure that the social, economic and political rights of vulnerable and marginalized groups are recognized and fulfilled, contributing to sustainable peace in the region. Humanitarian and emergency response activities remain a priority in emergency situations in line with the humanitarian mandate of CARE on a global level. CARE International Balkans implements projects in following countries and territories: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Albania.

Our strategy

CARE has developed two programme strategies that guide our work in the Balkans: Socio-Economic Inclusion and Gender Equality.
